The story of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by individuals in vulnerable situations and the devastating consequences of violence. Marlen, a young mother from Chicago, was the victim of a horrific crime that shocked her community and raised awareness about issues surrounding social media, mental health, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Join me today as I dive deep into the details of Marlen Ochoa-Lopez's life, her tragic death, the investigation that followed, and the broader implications of her story.
Background
Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was a 19-year-old mother living in Chicago, Illinois. She was known for her vibrant personality and her dedication to her family. At the time of her death, Marlen was pregnant with her second child and was looking forward to becoming a mother again. She had a close relationship with her family and friends, who described her as caring and loving.
In April 2019, Marlen began communicating with a woman named Clarisa Figueroa through a Facebook group dedicated to mothers. Figueroa had promised free baby clothes and Marlen, who was seeking support and resources during her pregnancy, connected with her. The two women arranged to meet and Marlen believed she was meeting Figueroa so she could receive free baby clothes for her unborn child. 51-year old Figueroa had other motives and sadly Ochoa-Lopez would find this out.
The Tragic Events
On April 23, 2019, Marlen Ochoa-Lopez went to the home of Clarisa Figueroa in the Chicago neighborhood of Garfield Ridge. What was intended to be a meeting about free baby clothes quickly turned into a nightmare. During the visit, Figueroa and her daughter, who was also involved in the murder, attacked Marlen.
As one held Marlen down, the other strangled her with a cable. She was brutally murdered in the home and her body was hidden in a trash can. The details surrounding her death are particularly gruesome, as it was later revealed that Figueroa had attempted to cut the baby from Marlen’s womb. Tragically, Marlen did not survive the attack.
Days later, Ochoa-Lopez’s family reported her missing. The investigation led authorities to Figueroa’s home, where they discovered Marlen’s body. The shocking nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the community and garnered significant media attention especially to the Facebook platform.
The Investigation
Following the discovery of Marlen’s body, Clarisa Figueroa and her daughter, who was 24 years old at the time, were both arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The investigation revealed that Figueroa had been involved in a series of deceitful actions, including pretending to be pregnant herself and attempting to pass off Ochoa-Lopez’s baby as her own using the photos she found on Facebook in efforts to communicate with other young pregnant ladies. Instead of pursuing professional help, Figueroa opted to express her misguided rage in a diabolical manner towards innocent young women who were undeserving of it.
In addition to the murder charges, Figueroa and her daughter faced charges related to the concealment of a homicide. The case highlighted the extreme lengths to which individuals might go in desperate situations, as well as, the dangers of trusting strangers in vulnerable circumstances. Especially strangers you meet online. The lengths to which Figueroa resorted are profoundly disturbing and wholly unjustifiable. This highlights the necessity of thoroughly vetting anyone you encounter online and ensuring you are accompanied by someone for safety.
Legal Proceedings
The trial of Clarisa Figueroa and her dirty daughter Desiree began in 2020. The prosecution presented evidence that included witness testimonies, forensic evidence, and details about the events leading up to Marlen’s death. The defense argued that the evidence was circumstantial and sought to establish reasonable doubt.
In April of 2024, Clarisa Figueroa was found guilty of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Her dirty daughter Des also faced charges and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. In my opinion, both should have received life behind bars, but it isn’t up for me to decide. The verdict brought a sense of closure to the entire Ochoa and Lopez family and friends, who had endured months of grief and uncertainty.
In my perspective, both individuals deserve life imprisonment with Clarisa Figueroa facing the death penalty. However, I am not a legal authority and do not have the power to dictate the fate of a disgruntled, disillusioned woman who committed the heinous act of murdering a young pregnant woman and subsequently mutilating her to steal her unborn child, who sadly didn’t make it.
