Almost 20 years ago, on a very cold night on November 19, 2006, I sat in my cozy home in Athens, Georgia, bundled up like a burrito, watching a documentary called “Christmas in Yellowstone." It was one of those frigid days where the air felt like it could freeze your thoughts, but I was busy hustling through three jobs at the time—yes, three!—including two full-time gigs so somethings seem like a distant blur these days. I was a walking caffeine commercial fueled by coffee and sheer determination.
As I watch the documentary, I was transported to the enchanting winter wonderland of Yellowstone National Park. The snow-covered pines looked like they were straight out of a holiday postcard and Old Faithful erupted in a plume of steam that seemed to dance in the frosty air. It was magical then. But let’s be real—it didn’t quite capture the true essence of Yellowstone. It was like trying to describe a chocolate cake by only showing one photo. Sure, it looked good, but where’s the gooey goodness?
Fast forward to today in 2025 and I can proudly say that Yellowstone has become one of my favorite places on Earth. I’ve visited so many times that I’ve practically memorized the park’s GPS coordinates. It was that very documentary that inspired me to pack my bags and move to Montana less than two years later, trading in my temporary Southern charm for mountain adventures. Who knew that a simple film could lead to a life filled with hiking, wildlife encounters, and the occasional bear-sighting panic? I think I discovered so much about myself living in Montana.
Tonight, from my home in Meridian, Idaho, I decided to revisit this documentary. As the familiar scenes unfolded, I couldn’t help but laugh at how the quality felt like it was stuck in a time warp—somewhere between 780 and 1080p. Seriously though, a 4K transfer is needed! Watching it made me feel a bit old, but hey, at least I can still laugh about it.
Despite its age and the need for a quality upgrade, I still wholeheartedly recommend this documentary. It’s a delightful reminder of the magic of Yellowstone, especially during the holiday season. So grab some frozen hot chocolate, snuggle up in your favorite blanket, and take a trip back to that snowy paradise. You might just find yourself dreaming of your own Yellowstone adventure, just as I did nearly two decades ago. And who knows? You might even be inspired to trade in your office chair for a camping chair—just watch out for those bears although they seem to be nice at Yellowstone.
