DIY Beauty: Body Butter

Body butter is simply an infusion of natural oil and cream ingredients. This holy grail in beauty is excellent for every skin type and will nourish your skin. Essentially important for the body, this is a product you can purchase virtually everywhere or make yourself. And the best part is, if you decide to make it, it is relatively simple to do so.

So, how do you make body butter?

First and foremost, you want to take a pan. Yes, any pan. I prefer to use a double boiling medium; however, I have used other types of pans before. You will want to begin by placing your shea butter into the pan. For this particular recipe, I am using the Organic Shea Butter from Mary Tylor Naturals

Additionally, you want to add your cocoa butter, as well as, your cold-pressed coconut oil. For this particular DIY, I have used the Organic Cocoa Butter by SaaQin, the Vita Coco Coconut Oil, and the NOW Solutions Sweet Almond Oil. Keep in mind, you can use whatever you want; however, these are just what I enjoy using when I make my body butters.

Now, you will want to cook on medium heat. The key is to combine all ingredients accordingly and melt them together. You don't want the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and almond oil to boil. You want to melt everything.

Once everything is melted, you want to place the melted mixture into a mixing bowl. It is very important to use a nice bowl that is capable of mixing. I personally like to use my KitchenAid mixer bowl, as it is a great kitchen appliance with an incredible bowl attached to it.

Next, you want to place the bowl into the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes or until your mixture is solidified.

Once your mixture is solidified, you want to remove it from the refrigerator. Now the fun part begins. You want to begin the mixing process. The key is whipping, but not too much and not too little. It is better to under whip than over whip, if that makes sense.

As you continue, you want to add your fragrance oil of choice followed by some corn starch. For this body butter, I used the Cinnabon Fragrance Oil from Bulk Apothecary and the Argo Corn Starch. It is crucial to test this on your arm to see how fast it dissolves and sinks into your skin.

When I first made this, I noticed that it dissolved rather quickly, so therefore, it was modestly oily. However, as I continued to add more corn starch, it started to thicken. Continue to test the product to see if the consistency changes. You want it to be smooth like butter, but also thick enough that it doesn't rapidly melt while on your skin. Know what I mean?

Once you have finished, place your body butter into a jar. I love to use the Ball Glass Mason Jars as they tend to be the most rustic. And I love decorating the glass, depending on my mood. Plus, they allow me to fill the product and they make product application quite easy. Another reason why they are so great is the fact that those who receive them can reuse them. And they are so inexpensive also.

And that's it. Your body butter is done. Let me know how yours turned out. Happy Holidays!
