The nostalgia of MySpace is one I will remember. Back in the day, it was the social media platform to be, where friendships were forged, music was shared, and yes, even celebrity friend requests were sent. I still remember the day I received a friend request from none other than Diddy himself. At the time he was using PDiddy I do believe and not Diddy. Flattering, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want a music mogul in their friend list? Especially the man who made Notorious BIG and JLo famous. But as tempting as it was, I never accepted that request and looking back, I can confidently say I dodged a bullet. A very big one.
Shortly after that friend request, my inbox lit up with emails from a man named Sean. He claimed he could “take care of me” and the usual complimentary rhetoric. At the time, I thought it was just another random guy trying his luck, but now I can’t help, but wonder if it was PDiddy himself reaching out under a different name. I had my email public at the time so anyone could email me. The thought today sends chills down my spine and I’m grateful I didn’t respond. Sadly, the email hasn’t been used in over a decade so it doesn’t exist anymore and I no longer use MySpace. The original messages were a little awkward, but nothing perverted.
During my MySpace days, I received thousands of friend requests and I often saw that famous people, celebrities I would message would read my messages, even if they never replied. Several of them did respond which was interesting. It was a wild time and I was just a girl navigating the chaotic complexities of social media because back then it was the biggest platform in the world.
But looking at PDiddy now, I can’t help, but feel a sense of sadness for him. The controversies and struggles he’s faced and are facing right now are a reminder that fame doesn’t shield anyone from personal issues and no one is above the law. I genuinely hope he gets the help he needs. In the end, I’m grateful for my choices back then as I am grateful for my choices today. I dodged a bullet and I’m thankful for the lessons learned along the way.
