Prince died three years ago today

Prince, one of the most decorated artists in the history of music passed away three years ago today on April 21, 2016. I was at the Body Shop Fitness Centers gym in Payette, Idaho working out when I first heard the news. The radio playing in the gym started to play nothing but Prince tunes, as the radio disc jockeys reminisced what he did for music.

I have been a fan of Prince for pretty much my entire life. I remember listening to his music and finding myself looking forward to hearing more. The first song I ever heard of him was "U Got The Look" before hearing "Lets Go Crazy" and finding myself really loving his music.

If you could fuse Freddie Mercury into James Brown with a hint of George Clinton, Elvis and Jimmi Hendrix, you would have Prince. He always added a little more funk and soul to make it rock and it roll.

Some of my favorite songs include: Gold, Baby I'm A Star, P Control, Computer Blue, Purple Rain, U Got The Look, Delirious, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki, Controversy, Pop Life, Get Off, Cream, Batdance and Raspberry Beret.

To listen to my rendition of Purple Rain, simply watch/listen to the video above. If it doesn't play, just click here right now. To listen to this song with LaShonda (ChocolateRocker) click here

Gone, but never forgotten. Music never does, as the soul never does too.

Purple Rain by Sarah Afshar

I am a huge fan of Prince and anyone who knows me, knows how much I appreciated and loved him as an artist. His music is literally some of the greatest pieces of work in the modern era. And if I were being honest, I would put him in the league with some of the greatest artists to exist including Mozart. When on Smule earlier, I decided to record this amazing classic using my iPhone and of course, my voice.

SKAM Artist remember Prince

Prince was an iconic superstar, as he was songwriter and singer, the man was a true entertainer. As a little bit of rock n' roll, soul, funk and even jazz, Prince was a composer and a multi-instrumentalist who mastered over 20 instruments by the time he was 30. He also laid out the tracks and produced a majority of his music too. He was an innovator, creator, a teacher and most importantly, a hard worker.

And on April 21st the world cried nothing, but purple tears as Prince tragically lost his life at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in his hometown, Chanhassen. The world was shocked, as the world continues to grieve by the loss of perhaps the greatest artist the world of music has ever seen, Prince Rogers Nelson.

“Prince was in a class all his own. He inspired everyone in the music industry, from DJs, to singers and rappers, producers and beyond. Prince changed the game with the way he fought for his craft every single day. He will be missed beyond measure.” Sujit Kundu, founder of SKAM Artist told AXS.

RIP Prince

As many of you are already aware, I am a huge fan of Prince. I first discovered Prince as a little girl. There was something captivating about his music. It resonated dopamine and really made you gravitate to it. The first song I ever heard was 'When Doves Cry'. I remember begging my mom to buy me his CD, but she knew the type of artist he was and at the time I was too young for his music. So, I took my allowance money and went behind her back and purchased 'Diamonds and Pearls' which came out when I was 10 years old. Ever since, I continued to support him and his music for years. I have so many favorite albums, but there is something about 'The Gold Experience' that stood out above the rest with 'Purple Rain' in a close second.

What are my favorite songs?

Gold
P Control
Baby Im A Star
U Got the Look (long look)
Purple Rain
Darling Nikki
Cream
Kiss
Get Off
Computer Blue
Pope
Raspberry Beret
Peach
Let's Go Crazy
Bat Dance
Controversy
Seven
etc.

Prince was more than just an artist with talent, he was an iconic mastermind who polished an entire genre by taking a few notes, putting them together and turning them up a notch. Prince's craft is and will continue to be legendary and his legacy will continue to live on. How many artists do you know compose, lay out the tracks, produce and perform their own music like Prince? To anyone who listens to his music let alone any Prince tune, you will know that the earworm was eminent.

As I type this, I am heartbroken. I am very sad that he left the world the way he did. And although Prince left this world, his music will forever remain in my heart and the hearts of millions. He was a true rock star and will forever live on in spirit. RIP Prince.
