When I first entered bar tending school, one of the very first drinks I learned to prepare was the "Flaming Dr. Pepper". I am a huge fan of Dr. Pepper and can appreciate the soda for it's diversity, yet unique flavor. However; I have learned to appreciate the "Flaming Dr. Pepper" more so, as it possesses a lot of quality liqueurs and cordials that make it much more appealing as a result. Little did I realize the "Flaming Dr. Pepper" does not possess any Dr. Pepper product at all.
The traditional Flaming Dr. Pepper includes Rum, Amaretto Liqueur (or Almond Liqueur), Coffee Liqueur (Kahlua, instead of Bailey's), Root Beer Schnapps, and Beer, but does not include Dr. Pepper or Grenadine.
Instead of using a standard recipe of the drink and appearing banal, as a result I decided to experiment and change a few cordials and liqueurs to make the drink much more flavorful and original. I also think this amazing drink so include Dr. Pepper to give it an extra authentic flavor.
Sarah's Flaming Dr. Pepper
1 oz. Rum (Light, preferably Bacardi 151 or Bacardi Superior)1 oz. DisaRonno Amaretto Liqueur
1 oz. Bailey's Coffee Liqueur
1 oz. Root Beer Schnapps (although Root Beer Liqueur works just as well)
1 oz. Beer (preferably a lighter lager)
3 oz. Dr. Pepper
1 Splash of Grenadine
Combine the Rum, Amaretto Liqueur, Coffee Liqueur, Root Beer Schnapps, Beer, Dr. Pepper, and Grenadine and serve in a chilled glass on the rocks with a maraschino cherry. Once you combined these ingredients, go ahead and light it up. With that stated, you can also take this amazing, yet authentic drink and turn it into a shot.
As a BONUS, if you are looking to be incredibly spontaneous and audacious, I truly do recommend the shot.
